Honey Mustard Salad Dressing

Cheap Eat Challenge: Watch or join us as our family of 6 eats, or tries to, on $6/day.

Last Saturday while making a Gatorade run for my sick kids, I came upon a bag of romaine. It was on sale. I had to have it. I'd been craving veggies and especially greens for a couple of days. I put it in the cart. And I wanted something creamy to go on it. I would have dropped $4 for some Girard's Caesar dressing if they'd had any. But they didn't. Which was probably good. So I searched in my mind and my somewhat limited salad dressing repertoire for something creamy with zing that would hit the same spot. And, my friends, this is it. So good, so simple. Make it.

Serves 2-4
Prep time: 2 minutes
Cost: .05

Note on mustard: You can go fancy if you wish, but plain old Aldi mustard still makes a good dressing here.

Note on sugar: The original recipe called for honey. I like it that way, but plain old sugar works fine too and is cheaper. The honey, however, does make for a runnier dressing. With the sugar, it's a bit thick. I like it that way, but if it's too thick for you add a few splashes more of lemon juice or a plain distilled vinegar.

1/4 C mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
1 T mustard
1 T sugar
1/2 T lemon juice

Mix it all together and serve.

  1. This is the exact same recipe I use! Love it! I usually sub half or all of the mayo for plain yogurt. Then I can glob more of it all over my romaine.

  2. Yogurt does sound good. Then you can call it "Greek Honey Mustard Dressing," right?
